Timber Conversion
In the past the carpenter would usually be responsible for felling the tree and then converting it into beams before any jointing could take place. Using a felling axe and a broad axe the green timber is easily hewn into shape. Smaller sections would then be cut with a saw either on two large trestles or over a sawpit.
Nowadays a modern sawmill makes short work of these tasks and most of our timber is converted in this way but we enjoy hewing and sawing as a demonstration and we have used hand hewn timbers in several of our projects.
