New Framing Projects

Sutton Hoo signage

The National Trust have managed the internationally important ancient Royal burial site at Sutton Hoo for some years now and they felt it was time they upgraded their signage at the entrance and along the route into the site. With many years of hand conversion experience coupled with an understanding of ancient carpentry practices we were the obvious local choice to provide hand converted timbers for this project.

We spent some time on site hewing some of the bollards for the driveway and this was done as a live demonstration to the sites visitors. We took along a few of our ancient axes to show how the broadaxe has changed since early times and to show people how timber was converted from the round in days gone by. The sign at the main entrance was produced in our workshop using similarly hand-hewn timbers and King Raedwald’s royal helmet was carved into the main panel and partly gilded as a striking logo. A simplified version of the helmet design was cut into the bollards and all carving was done by our friend Thomas Staddon from Ipswich.
